Deep Dental Cleaning: When to Do It

You may believe that a deep dental cleaning is something that is done after having spent a lot of time without visiting the dentist or having consumed very sticky or messy foods.

Actually, a deep dental cleaning is a specific procedure performed by the dental hygienist to treat periodontal diseases or periodontitis.

It is usually carried out when the patient has not visited the dentist on a regular basis (every six months) to get a dental cleaning.

The importance of deep Dental Cleaning

When you visit the dentist, he will use an instrument called a periodontal probe to measure the area around the teeth and see if you have periodontal pockets (the area between the tooth and the gum where the bacteria is formed).

Ideally, normal healthy periodontal pockets have a depth of no more than 3 millimeters. If the periodontal pockets measure more than 5 millimeters, it is very likely that the dentist will instruct you to visit the dental hygienist to do a dental scaling and root planing.

It is recommended that all adults undergo a periodontal evaluation per year to determine if additional treatment is required.

Periodontal pocket depth measurement is only part of a complete dental evaluation.

The process of a deep dental cleaning

In the world of dentistry, deep dental cleaning is also called tooth scraping and root planing. According to specialists, tooth scraping involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and the area of periodontal pockets between the teeth and gums.

Your dentist can perform these procedures with ultrasonic electric instruments or manual dental curettage tools.

Root planing is the other part of deep dental cleaning. The dental hygienist will use a dental scraping instrument to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the root of the teeth.

To do a dental scraping and a root planing, you will have to visit the dentist at least twice a year.

It may be necessary to make a follow-up visit to confirm that the gums and teeth are healthy and that there is no depth in the periodontal pockets.

Care after a dental scraping and root planing

Ideally, after the appointment for deep dental cleaning, the bacteria is removed from the periodontal pockets of the teeth and in the coming weeks, the gums will be healthy if the patient performs proper oral hygiene every day.

If deep dental scraping and visits to the dentist for a period of 3 months are not enough to revert periodontal disease, you will have to consult a periodontist to consider the periodontal treatment to follow.
